The Townshend Acts Flashcards
What were the Townshend Acts?
The Acts placed taxes on popular goods such as glass, paint, and tea.
What provoked the rest of the colonies to resist the Acts?
Samuel Adams wrote a letter protesting the Acts and sent it to every colony, which argued the Acts violated the rights of the colonists as British citizens.
How did the colonists react after Samuel Adams’ letter?
They all, even the loyalists, boycotted the goods that were taxed. The women made dresses from home-spun cloth, brewing tea from pine needles and buying only American goods.
How did Parliament react to the colonists’ boycott?
Lord North convinced Parliament to repeal all the taxes because of money loss, leaving only the tax on tea. This is because he wasn’t ready to give up on the idea of taxing Americans.
