What is the Quartering Act?
A
The Quartering Act ordered colonists to house British troops and provide them with candles, bedding, salt, vinegar, and/or cider.

Why did the colonists not like the Quartering Act?
A
All of the supplies they were required to provide cost money. New York and New Jersey specifically asked why they had to provide when the colonists took up space and did nothing.

How did the colonists protest?
A
In 1767, the New York assembly decided to not approve funds for “salt, vinegar, and liquor.”

A
They refused to let the assemblies meet until they agreed to the Quartering Act.
