Q

What sparked the debate about the Sabbath between Jesus and the Pharisees?

A

Jesus and his disciples were walking through a corn field on the Sabbath and began to pick the ears of corn. The Pharisees saw what Jesus was doing and said to each other that it was against the Law for them to be doing that. Later Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for the good of human beings, they were not made for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even on the Sabbath day.”

Q

Recall the Parable of the Sower

A

One day a man went out to sow some corn seeds. As he scattered the seeds across the field, some of them fell on the path, where the birds came and ate it up. Some of the seeds fell on the rocky ground where there was little soil. The seeds soon sprouted and when the sun came up they were scorched and because the roots weren’t deep enough, they dried out. Some of the seeds fell among the thorn bushes where they grew but were choked by the plants and so therefore did not bear fruit. Some of the seeds fell among the good soil, where they sprouted, grew and produced corn, some thirty grains, some sixty and some a hundred.

Q

Explain the meaning of the Parable of the Sower?

A

The Sower who spreads the seeds is the person that sows God’s message about the Kingdom of God. Some people are like the seeds that fall on the path, as soon as they hear the message, Satan comes and takes it away. Some people are like the seeds that fall on the rocky ground, at first they receive it gladly but the message does not go in deep enough and so when challenges arise, they give up at once. Some people are like the seeds that fall among the thorn bushes because they take in the message but distractions like worries and riches chokes the message and they don’t respond and don’t bear fruit. Some people are like those who fall on the good soil, they hear the message, accept it, make it the centre of their life and ultimately bear fruit.

Q

Recall the Parable of the Growing Seed

A

Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is like this: A man scatters seeds in his field. He sleeps at night and is up and about during the day and all the while the seeds are sprouting and growing. Yet the man does not know how it happens. The soil itself makes the plant grow and bear fruit, first the stalk, then the ear and finally the ear full of corn. When the corn is ripe, the man starts cutting it with a sickle, for harvest time has come

Q

What is the meaning of the Parable of the Growing Seed?

A

Once you have been given the Word of God, although it may seem challenging and tough to understand at first, it is up to you to use the information to develop a stronger faith. Even though people can nurture and guide you in the right direction and provide the best possible conditions to grow, it is all up to you to put the effort in yourself if you are to see any progress. Every stage in which you grow and develop you can survive even harder challenges than you could before and this process continues until you have full understanding of the Word of God.

Recall the Parable of the Mustard Seed

Jesus said the Kingdom of God is like this: A man takes a mustard seed, the smallest seed in the world and plants it in the ground. After a while it grows up and becomes the biggest of plants. It puts out such large branches that the birds come to nest in its shade.

Q

Recall the Parable of Jesus and the Children

A

People brought children to Jesus so that he could put his hands on them, but the disciples scolded the people for doing this. Jesus became angry with the disciples and said, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of God belongs to those such as these. I assure you that whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” Then Jesus continued to place his hands on the children and blessed them.

Q

Recall the Parable about the Rich Young Man

A

A man came to Jesus, knelt down at his feet and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life.” Jesus said, “Why do you call me good, no one is good except God alone. You must follow the Ten Commandments including, do not commit murder, do not steal, do not commit adultery and respect your mother and father.” The man said that he had followed all of these commandments since he was born. Jesus then told him to go and sell all that he had and give all the money to the poor and if he did this, he would have riches in heaven. When the man heard this, gloom spread across his face and he walked away sad because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples, “it is much harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than it is for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.”

Q

Retell the story of the Greatest Commandment

A

A religious leader came to Jesus and asked him, “What is the most important commandment of them all.” Jesus said, “This is the most important commandment: The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord our God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and with all your strength. The second most important commandment is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. There are no commandments more important than these two. The teacher or the law said, “It is more important to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength than it is to offer animals as sacrifices to God. Jesus noticed how wise the man’s answer was and said that he was not far from the Kingdom of God.
