Q

Retell the Last Supper

A

On the first day of the Passover festival, the day in which the lambs were killed for the Passover Meal, the disciples asked Jesus where he wanted them to prepare the meal. Jesus told them to go into the city, find a man carrying a jug of water and he would show them to a large upstairs room, prepared and furnished in which they would prepare the meal. When Jesus and his disciples sat down to share the Passover Meal, Jesus said that one of them who dips their head in the bread dish would betray him. The disciples all said that they would not betray Jesus. Jesus then said, “The Son of Man will die like the Scriptures say but how terrible it is for the man who betrays the son of Man. That man will wish he had never been born.” While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, “This is my body.” Then he took a cup of wine, gave thanks to God and gave it to his disciples saying, “This is my blood which will be poured out for many. The blood that seals God’s covenant.” He said, “I tell you that I will not drink wine again until I am in the Kingdom of God.”

A

Jesus took Peter, James and John to a place called Gethsemane and he told them to sit down and keep watch. Distress became over Jesus and he said to the disciples that the sorrow inside his heart was almost crushing him. He went away to pray to God by saying, “Father, can you take away this cup of suffering from me. Yet it is not what I want but what you want.” Jesus then returned to the disciples and found that they were sleeping. Jesus said told them to stay awake and not give into any temptations, as the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Jesus then went of to pray again but when he returned twice more, the disciples were still sleeping. When he came back the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come! Look, the Son of Man is now being handed over to the power of sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, here is the man who is betraying me!”

Q

Retell the events which took place at Jesus’ trial before the Jewish Council

A

It was at night once Jesus was brought to the High Priest’s house to be questioned and this is where the teachers of the law gathered. Peter was also there and he stayed in the courtyard. The chief priests began to try and find evidence against Jesus but they could not find any. Some people said that they heard Jesus say that he would tear down the Temple and after three days he would build a new one that was not made by man, but they could not make their stories agree. The High Priest stood up and asked Jesus if he had any answers to the accusations placed against him but Jesus remained quiet. The High Priest then asked Jesus if he was the Messiah and the Son of God. Jesus replied by saying, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man on the right side of the Almighty along with the clouds of heaven.” The High Priest tore his robes and everyone voted against Jesus because they believed his statement was blasphemy. Some people began to even hit and spit on Jesus.

Q

Retell the story about Jesus before Pilate

A

Early in the morning, the religious leaders, the chief priests and the whole council gathered together to decide on their plans for Jesus. They put Jesus in chains and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked Jesus if he was the King of the Jews and Jesus replied by saying, “So you say.” Then Pilate asked Jesus, “Why aren’t you answering any of the accusations put against you?” But Jesus did not reply and Pilate became amazed. Every Passover Festival, Pilate allowed the crowd to free one prisoner. This time Pilate allowed the crowd to either allow Jesus free or a man named Barabbas who was a murderer. He did this because he thought the people would ask to set Jesus free but his plan backfired because the chief priests encouraged the crowd to set Barabbas free. Pilate then asked the people what they wanted him to do with Jesus and they all said to crucify him. Pilate tried to argue with the crowd but the crowd said to crucify Jesus again. Pilate, in order to please the crowd, set Barabbas free, started to whip Jesus and lead him to be crucified.

Q

Explain what happened at Jesus’ Crucifixion

A

A man called Simon from Cyrene helped Jesus carry his cross to Golgotha which meant the place of the skull. The soldiers offered Jesus wine with a drug to relieve the pain but Jesus refused it and then the soldiers began to roll dice to see who would get Jesus’ clothes. Then Jesus was crucified at 9 in the morning with two bandits on either side of him. The people began to mock Jesus and the religious leaders said, “If he could save others then he should be able to save himself.” At noon, darkness spread across the whole country which lasted for 3 hours. At 3pm, Jesus cried out, “Eloi, Eloi lema sabathcthani.” Which meant my God, my God why have you abandoned me. The people thought Jesus was calling for Elijah the prophet to come and save him but then Jesus died. In the Temple, the Temple curtain was torn in two from the top to the bottom and one of the leaders said, “Jesus really was the Son of God.” There were women there also, including Mary Magdalene, Mary Mother of James and Salome.

As they were walking to the tomb, they all said to one another who would roll away the stone from the entrance, but once they got to the tomb, the stone was gone. Then they went inside the tomb and saw that Jesus had also gone but they saw this young man dressed in white and he said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus but he is not here, for he has risen like he said he would.” The man told the women to tell the disciples that Jesus was going ahead of them to Galilee and that they would meet him there. Once the women left the tomb, they were so frightened and afraid that they did not tell anyone what had happened.
