Discipleship Flashcards
Retell the calling of the first four disciples
Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, when he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew catching fish with a net. Jesus said to them, “Come with me and I will teach you to catch people.” Both of them dropped their nets and began to follow Jesus. As they travelled further down the shore, Jesus spotted two more fishermen, James and John who were the sons of Zebedee. Jesus told them to come with him and straight away, they left their boat and joined Jesus.
Retell Jesus’ Calling of Levi
Jesus went back down to the shore of Lake Galilee and a crowd came to him and he started teaching them. As he was walking, he saw a tax collector called Levi in an office and went over to him and said, “Follow me.” Levi got up and followed him. Then Jesus was sharing a meal with Levi and other outcasts and tax collectors joined them. Some of the Pharisees that were there began to become annoyed that Jesus was eating with outcasts and they said, “Why does he eat with such people?” Jesus heard them and said, “People who are well do not need a doctor, only the ones who are sick. So I did not come to call respectable people but outcasts.”
Retell Jesus’ Rejection at Nazareth
Jesus went back to his home town of Nazareth and he began to teach in the synagogue on the Sabbath day. There were many people that were there and they were all amazed but they began to question Jesus. They said to each other, “Where did he get all this wisdom? How can he perform miracles? Isn’t he the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters living here? So they rejected him. Jesus then said, “Prophets are respected everywhere expect for their home town and by their relatives and family.” Jesus did not perform any miracles their because of their lack of faith and he only healed a few sick people.
Retell the Mission of the Twelve
After teaching in the synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus called his disciples together. He sent them out two by two in pairs and gave them theses instructions: to not bring anything with them except a stick - no beggars bag, no money and no bread. They were to wear sandals but not to carry an extra shirt. If they were welcomed in a place, they should stay there until they needed to leave. However if they came to a town in which they were not welcomed, they were to leave it and shake the dust off their feet to warn them. The disciples went out to preach to the people to turn away from their sins, they drove out demons and they healed sick people by rubbing oil on them.
Retell the cost of being a disciple
Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come with me, he must forget self, carry his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his own life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and the gospel will save it. Do people gain anything if they win the whole world but lose their life? Of course not! If a person is ashamed of me and my teaching, then the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his father with the holy angels
Recall Jesus’ warning about faith
Jesus said that anyone allowed the little ones to lose faith in him, it would be better for that person to have a millstone tied around their neck and thrown into the sea. Jesus said, “So if your hand makes you lose faith, cut it off! It is better to enter the Kingdom of God with one hand than have two and go to hell. If your foot makes you lose faith, cut it off and if your eye makes you lose faith, take it out, for it is better to enter the Kingdom of God with one foot and one eye than have everything but go to hell.”
Retell the Question about Paying Taxes
Some of the Pharisees and some of Herod’s party were sent to Jesus to trap him with questions. They said to Jesus, “Teacher, we know you tell the truth without worrying about what other people think. You pay no attention to anyone’s status , but teach the truth about God’s will for people. So, tell us, is it against our Law to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor. Should we pay them or not?” Jesus saw right through their trap and told them to bring a silver coin to him. Jesus asked them whose face was on the coin and whose name was inscribed on the coin. They said the Emperor. So Jesus said, “Give the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor and give God what belongs to God. They were all amazed at Jesus.
Retell the Story about the Woman’s offering
Jesus was sitting beside the Temple Treasury and was watching people drop their money into the offering box. Many rich people came and put in a lot of money. Then a poor widow came to the offering box and put in two little copper coins, worth about a penny. Then Jesus gathered his disciples together and said, “This poor widow has put more in the offering box than all the others. For the others gave the spares from their riches, but this poor widow gave all that she had. She gave all that she had to live on.”
Retell the story of Peter’s Denial of Jesus
Peter was in the courtyard of the High Priest’s house, when a servant girl came up to him and said, “You too, are one of them.” Peter denied it by saying, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” Just then a cock crowed. The servant girl told the bystanders that he was one of them but then Peter denied it. A little while later, the bystanders said, “It is impossible for you to deny that you are one of them because you too are from Galilee. Then Peter said, “I swear that I am telling the truth. May God punish me if I am not. I don’t know the man you are talking about.” Then a cock crowed for a second time and Peter remembered Jesus’ prediction, “before the cock crows twice, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Then Peter broke down and started to cry.
