- Edgar Aethling and archbishop Stigand
- Decided to resist and fight William
However they would need a leader which was lead to a disagreement on who would lead them
What where Williams thoughts about London, why where both options risky ?
He knew it would be to dangerous to directly attack London
He knew if the Londoners and soldiers resisted it could be catastrophic
However not taking it was a huge risk as it could make him look weak and encourage English resistance

Approached it slowly and took a roundabout route
-First attacking Romney- some of his men had died here previously
-He wanted to punish Romney and hoped it could send a warning to others
- he then headed north, then west crossing the Thames at Wallingford where he builds a castle and then Berkhamsted where he does the same
What did Williams army do as they moved towards London ?
- they laid waste to homes, propoetry, crops and farms animals
- aiming to instal fear within the population and intimidate the English into accepting him as king
Did Williams approach to getting people to accept him work ?
It worked
- first archbishop Stigand left London then Edwin, Morcar and Archbishop Aldred
- they met him at Berkhamsted
- this surrender is known as the submission of the earls
