We don’t have concrete evidence or word from either of them so we rlly on a chronicler
Edwin was angry at William as he promised he could marry one of his daughters- could of given Edwin a lot more power and status
However william hadn’t yet kept the promise
Shows distrust
Morcar got replaced as earl of Northumbria although William had said he could keep his title
Suggests distrust

They relaised they didn’t have as much power as they had been promised
Also they where still angry about the humiliation they faced during Williams tour in 1067

He reacts very fast
First leading an army north stoping in Edwin’s land of Mercia where he had castles built in Warwick and Nottingham
Then heads to Northumbria (Morcars land) and built a castle in York
However he allowed his men to harry and pillage along the way as punishment to Edwin and Morcar
What was the result ?
Edwin and Morcar quickly surrendered without any real fighting taking place

Williams actions and leadership proved to be to much for them
