Rewarding Followers Flashcards
What did William do with the land and more specifically the land owners ?
He didn’t in fact take all the land and give it to his followers as he wanted to try and avoid spurring a rebellion
What 4 measures did William raise to try and not provoke an English rebellion ? Think: laws, Morc+Edw, Thegns land and archbishops
- promised to rule within Edwards laws and to work with the surviving lords
- allowed Earls Morcar and Edwin to keep their titles and most of their land
- allowed English Thegns to buy their land back from him (only if they didn’t fight at Hastings)
- retained Stigand and Aldred as archbishops
Why did William do these things ?
The decision where in hope that the English could see there was no point in rebelling as William was the legitimate heir as he provided continuity
Why did William have to reward his followers ?
He had to show he was a man of his word and he was honorable
How did he reward his followers ?
- gave his men the lands of the English who had died at Hastings
- he did still own the land but it was theirs aslong as they remained loyal if they did not he had no issue with taking it back
- William FitzOsbern received much of Harold Godwinson land in Wessex
