Who where the three people who revolted ?
Roger, Earl of Hereford
Ralph, earl of Norfolk
Waltheof, earl of Northumbria
Who had they hoped would support them ?
They hoped they could gain support from the Danish and the English people
What did they intend to do with England ?
They intended to split England into three with Waltheof in the north, Roger in the west and Ralph on the east
What was somewhat wrong with this plan?
One of them had to be king although they hadn’t decided who
This was a recipe for disaster and it was inevitable that something was to go wrong
What factor seemed to favor the rebellion? Think where William usually is after 1073.
-William was in Normandy
-However Lanfranc the Archbishop of Canterbury was in charge who was very capable
- he was also supported by Williams half brother bishop Odo of Bayeux
Who ruined the plan and who found out ? Why might he of done this ?
Waltheof betrayed the plotters
He confessed to Lanfranc
- we don’t know why he did it but it’s possible he was forced to take part and told Lanfranc as soon as possible or perhaps he intended to betray them we simply don’t know
What did Lanfranc do as soon as he heard about the plan? Is this successful ?
As soon as Lanfranc here’s about it he set out to stop it
- he wrote to Roger telling him to make peice with the King
- this doesn’t work and Roger+Ralph don’t back down
What do Roger and Ralph do after Lanfranc writes to them ? How does Lanfranc respond to this
- they led their armies planning to meet in the south
- Lanfranc sent two royal armies north which stopped the rebel armies from combining
What had Roger and Ralph hoped for ?
- they hoped for Danish support however it arrived after they had lost
What did the Danes do when they eventually turned up ?
- pillaged York again then left without fighting an army
What is the fate of Ralph of Norfolk ?
He is cornered by a royal army
- he fled to Norwhich then to Brittany, his wife defended Norwhich but surrendered and negotiated her leave to Brittany
- Ralph’s men got mutilated such as blinding and cutting off of limbs
What was the fate of Roger of Hereford ?
- gets captured
- all his lands got taken and he was imprisoned for the rest of his life
- he died in prison in 1087
What happens to Waltheof ?
- put on trial and William spent ages deciding what to do to him
- one morning in May 1076 he is rushed out and executed (be heading)
- we don’t know why this happened but it’s possible William was angry at the rebels and had lost his patience

- Danes did not arrive in time
- Waltheof spilt the beans to Lanfranc
- the revolt was poorly planned and didn’t gain much support
- Lanfranc and Odo reacted quickly and stopped the two armies merging
- the rebels didn’t win the support of the English people
