the exchange of gases between the lungs & the blood

the movement of gas molecules from an area of high concentration or partial pressure to an area of low concentration or partial pressure

A
the movement of oxygen from the air into the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood into the air

what is the structure of the alveoli?
A
very thin walls (one cell thick) = short diffusion pathway
good blood supply because of extensive capillary network surrounding alveoli
large surface area = greater uptake of oxygen
