the vascular system Flashcards
what is the vascular system made up of?
blood vessels that carry blood through the body
what do these blood vessels do?
deliver oxygen and nutrients to the body tissues
take away waste products (e.g. CO2)
what do the blood vessels ensure?
muscles have an adequate supply of oxygen during exercise in order to cope with increased energy demand
what are the two types of circulation?
1) pulmonary
2) systemic
what is pulmonary circulation?
deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and oxygenated blood back to the heart
what is systemic circulation?
oxygenated blood to the body from the heart and the return of deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart
what is the order of travel blood vessels make around the body?
heart - arteries - arterioles - capillaries - venules - veins - heart
characteristics of a vein:
1) thin muscle/elastic tissue layers
2) blood at low pressure
3) valves
4) wider lumen
characteristics of an artery:
1) high blood pressure
2) more elastic outer layer to cope with fluctuations in pressure
3) smaller lumen
4) smooth inner layer
characteristics of capillaries:
1) only wide enough to let one cell pass through at a given time
slows down blood flow
allows exchange of nutrients with the tissues to take place by diffusion
