the structure of the heart Flashcards
Cardiovascular System
what is the muscle that divides the heart into two parts?
the septum
what are the two chambers of the heart called?
atrium and ventricle
what is the bigger chamber of the heart?
the atria
what is the role of the atria?
to push blood down into the ventricles
description of the atria
small and with thinner muscular walls
what is the role of ventricles?
contract with great force to push blood out of the heart
description of ventricles
thick muscular walls
what is the bigger side of the heart and why?
the left
it needs to pump blood all around the body
what type of blood does the right side of the heart pump to the lungs?
deoxygenated
what is the role of the vena cava?
to bring deoxygenated blood back to the right atrium.
what is the role of the pulmonary artery?
leaves the right ventricle with deoxygenated blood to go to the lungs
what is the role of the aorta?
leaves the left ventricle with oxygenated blood leading to the body
what are the roles of the valves of the heart?
regulate blood flow by ensuring it only flows in one direction
where is the tricuspid valve located?
between the right atrium and right ventricle
where is the bicuspid valve located?
between the left atrium and left ventricle
