cardiovascular drift Flashcards
how is cardiovascular drift characterised?
a progressive decrease in stroke volume and arterial blood pressure with a progressive rise in heart rate
when does cardiovascular drift occur?
after prolonged exercise (10 minutes +) despite intensity remaining the same
why does cardiovascular drift occur?
when we sweat a portion of lost fluid comes from plasma volume
the reduce in plasma will reduce stroke volume and venous return
what will happen due to reduced SV and venous return?
heart rate will increase to compensate
cardiac output will be higher to attempt to cool down the body
how can cardiovascular drift be minimised?
maintain high fluid consumption before and during exercise
