The Structure of the Genome Flashcards
What is the genome?
A genome is the total hereditary genetic information found in the DNA.
What is the genome made up of?
Exons (coding regions)- genes that code for protein.
Introns (non-coding)- other DNA sequences that don’t code for proteins.
What happens to introns in the genome?
Non coding regions removed during RNA splicing.
What are the roles of introns on the genome?
Regulate transcription (turns transcribed genes on/off)
Transcribed but no translated (rRNA/tRNA)
No known function.
What are the two ways of transferring genomes?
Vertical
Horizontal
Vertical
Parent to offspring (eukaryotes)
Horizontal
Same generation (prokaryotes)
Vertical Inheritance
Sexual methods may vary.
Asexual methods have no variety.
