Cost effective so higher profits are generated.
What are benefits of free range farming?
Ensures that animals don’t suffer pain/distress or a low quality of life.
Products can be sold at a higher price.
What are the costs of free range farming?
Increased costs.
Labour intensive.
What are the behavioural indicators of poor animal welfare?
Stereotype behaviour
Misdirected behaviour
Failure in sexual/parental behaviour
Altered levels of activity
What is stereotype behaviour?
Repetitive movements that lack variation e.g. continuous chewing movements, pacing back and forth.
Reduced when environment is enriched.
What is misdirected behaviour?
Inappropriate behaviour towards themselves, other animals or surroundings e.g. excessive grooming/chewing themselves, chickens pecking each other, chewing other objects in environment.
Reduced when environment is enriched.
What is failure in sexual/parental behaviour?
Cannot reproduce or reject their young.
This is overcome by social contact with members of their own species in a spacious environment.
What is altered levels of activity?
Hysteria (hight level of activity)
Apathy (low level of activity)
Reduced when environment is enriched.
