Genomics Flashcards
What is genomics?
The study of the sequence of bases in DNA called the sequence data.
What is genomics undertaken on?
The sequence data of pathogens (disease causing organisms e.g. MRSA) and pests in food crops (e.g. greenfly etc.)
What is bioinformatics?
The comparison of sequence data using computer and statistical tests.
What is phylogenetics?
Needs sequence data and fossil data to study evolutionary relatedness.
Gives an estimate of time since divergence from common ancestor.
More closely related species are more similar in sequence data- diverged later in time.
What are the 3 domains of life?
Bacteria
Archaea
Eukaryotes
What is evolution of life?
The more related the species, the closer the sequence data.
Many genes are conserved across different species due to common ancestor.
What are molecular clocks?
Graph showing how many amino acids differ (derived from sequence data) since we have a common ancestor. Also use fossil data.
What are pharmacogenetics?
Drugs designed to be suit individuals with certain sequence data.
