The Strange Situation Flashcards
Who made the Strange situation?
Mary Ainsworth
What is a disinhibited attachment?
An attachment where there is little to no stranger anxiety as the individual seeks attention and affection from anyone who’ll give it
What five things does the Strange situation measure?
. Proximity seeking
. Stranger anxiety
. Secure base behaviour
. Response to reunion
. Separation anxiety
The results of ainsworth’s study were
64% were secure
25% were insecure avoidance
10% were insecure resistant
Does Ainsworths study have interobserver reliability and what did Bick do?
Bick in 2012 conducted the same study with multiple raters and found an agreement of 94% of the attachment types. (It uses the same behavioural catagories)
Ainsworth tested this herself as well and the similariry was still very high
What are the strengths of the study?
- Very good interobserver reliability
- The behavioural categories are simple and clear
The validity is improved by it being a predictor of subsequent outcomes
What did Bick et al find?
They looked at the interobsever reliability of the study with a team of trained observers replicating the study to see if their scores were similar. They agreed 94% of the time of the attachment type
What might mean the study is enthnocentric?
Cultural variations could mean certain attachment types arise from the culture the baby is in. Therefore, this idea of a secure attachment is a western one exclusively
What kind of study is the Strange situation?
A controlled observation
Is it time or event sampling?
Time
What are the advantages/disadvantages of time sampling?
. It is procedural and therefore replicable _ Ad
. It is easier_ Ad
. It looses the potential to miss nothing_ Di
