Harry Harlow
What is contact comfort?
A term Harlow coined to describe the comfort drive being more powerful than the food one within his monkeys
How many monkeys were in Harlow’s study?
16, 8 in each condition (which mother had the milk)
What kind of behavioural abnormalities did Harlow’s monkeys develop?
. More timid
. Socially inept sometimes aggressive towards other monkeys
. Had trouble mating
. Females were horrible mothers, showing either no regard for their young or killing them.
Could the abnormal monkey behaviours be reversed?
Yes, but only if they were left with their surrogate mothers for under 90 days, those roughly left alone over 90 days couldn’t be helped.
What is sexual imprinting?
Having a sort of model of what should be mated with based off of the first imprint.
Who questioned Lorenz’s findings?
Guiton
Guiton’s study was of…
Whether imprinting had a permanent effect on mating behaviour
What does Guiton’s research mean to Lorenz?
It support the theory of imprinting however unlike Lorenz it sees it as reversible. Guitonn introduced the chickens back to their own kind and the sexual imprinting he’d witnessed dissolved
