the social learning theory Flashcards
what are the basic assumptions of this theory?
-behaviour is learned from the environment&observing others
what study looked into the basic assumptions?
Bandura
what was bandoras method?
participants aged 3-6 were shown adults playing with a toy and either saw them
- being aggressive with the doll
- playing friendly
- nothing
what ere the findings and conclusion of banduras research?
- he found those who watched the aggressive behaviour showed significantly more aggression than the other groups
- watching something aggressive makes you more likely to act the same way
GRAVE of banduras study?
G-only done on children R-when repeated he saw the same a-reduce violence in games v-low ecological validity e-psychological harm
what are the four factors bandora said led to social learning?
-paying ATTENTION to the model
-being able to REMEMBER the action
-having the ABILITY to replicate the action
-being MOTIVATED to replicate the action
ARAM
What study supports the motivation factor?
bandora and vicarious reinforcement
- same as before but they children either saw an ending where the adult was rewarded for aggression, punished or saw no consequences
- those who saw the child be rewarded were more aggressive as they were motivated
strengths of the social learning theory?
- explains why behaviour are imitated
- holistic theory as it combines thought processes with behavioural principles
weaknesses of the social learning theory?
- heavily artificial and can be caused of being prone to demand characteristics
- could be an excuse for people to commit crimes
What did bandura suggest about mediating factors?
We don’t imitate everything we see, there are a series of meditating factors that take place between observing the behaviour and then deciding whether or not to imitate it
