chapter 3-Behavioural treatments for Phobias Flashcards
who came up with systematic desensitisation?
WOLPE 1958
before exposure what is the patient trained to do and why?
trained to relaxation techniques and Wolpe argued it would help ‘counter condition’ so they would begin to associate the feared object with relaxation
what are the 6 stages of systematic desensitisation?
1) patient trained in deep muscle relaxation
2) patient and therapist draw up fear hierarchy
3) patient gets into relaxed state
4) patients asked to imagine/encounter the first step on the hierarchy until they fear nothing
5) move to next step on hierarchy and then real life exposure
6) patient commonly given ‘homework’s’ between sessions
what evidence is there for the effectiveness of systematic desensitisation?
Gilory 2006
what was gilorys method?
45 patients with a spider phobia were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups
1) computer aided vicarious exposure (not rly exposed)
2) therapist delivered exposure
3) relaxation placebo
- each group received 3 45 min sessions and they were measures pre, post and at 3 month follow up assessment
results of Gilroy’s experiment?conclusion?
- computer aided was most effective followed by therapist
- treatments involving gradual exposure resulted in significant reductions both in short and long term
appropriateness of SD?
:)-teaches patients to relax
:)-easy to explain
:(-time consuming
what does flooding involve?
going to the top of someones fear hierarchy and exposing them to the thing they are most afraid of
what evidence is there for flooding and what did they find?
BARLOW-2002
he found that if a patient is willing to undergo flooding then its just as effective as systematic desentisitaion
appropriateness of flooding?
:)-flooding can be rapid and effective
:(-unethical as patient gets very distressed
