The Skeletal Systemm- Bone Formation, Growth, Remodling And Repair Flashcards
What does the skeletal system consist of
Bones, Joints, Supporting tissues
What are the two types of ossification
Intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification
Where is the bone built in intramembrous ossification
Built on a model made of a membrane of CT
When does intramembrous ossification occur
During fetal development
Where is bone built during endochondral ossificationand when does it begin
Bone is built on a model made of hyaline cartilage and it begins during fetal development and many times is completed by age 7
What is the hyaline cartilage model made of and what is it surrounded by
made of chondrocytes, collagen, and ECM. Surrounded by connective tissue membrane (perichondrium) and immature cartilage cells (chondroblasts)
Where does endochondral ossification begin
Begins at primary ossification center
What enters the primary ossification center and what is delivered there
Blood vessels enter via nutrient dormant and osteoblasts are delivered by the blood come in. they replace cartilage with spongy bone
What happens when osteoclasts create an opening in the bone collar
They do this for blood vessels and bone cell entry into the primary ossification center
When the medullary cavity is created, what happens
It gets enlarged by osteoclasts and fills with bone marrow. The remaining calcified cartilage is replaced by bone. Epiphyses finish ossifying.
How do long bones lengthen and what does it involve
By longitudinal growth it involves division of chondrocytes in epiphyseal plate
Where does bone growth take place
At epiphysis on side closest to diaphysis
What is the epiphyseal plate composed of
Hyaline cartilage that did not yet ossify. It is made up of 5 different zones
What is appositional growth
Growth in width
What is the growth hormone secreted by
Anterior pituitary gland
