Spinal cord/ spinal nerve anatomy Flashcards
What does the spinal cord extend from and where does it end?
Extends from foramen magnum to L1-L2.
What is the filum terminale and what does it anchor to?
Continuation of pia matter after the end of the spinal cord. Anchors to the coccygeal vertebrae.
Are spinal nerves considered mixed nerves? Why or why not?
Yes, because they are formed from fusion of the sensory and motor neurons.
Where do sensory (afferent) nerves bring information up to?where are they grouped and localized
Bring information into the spinal cord via the posterior root. Grouped and localized within posterior root ganglion
What kind of neurons are sensory neurons?
Pseudounipolar neurons
Where do motor (efferent) nerves take information to?
Take information out of the spinal cord to target cells via the anterior root.
What kind of neurons are motor neurons and where are they found?
Multipolar neurons found within anterior horns of spinal cord.
What are posterior columns?
Carry somatosensory stimuli including fine touch, vibration, propioception from upper and lower limbs and trunk and neck.
What are spinocerebellar tracts?
Carry propioceptive stimuli to the cerebellum
What is the anterolateral system
Carry stimuli about pain, temperature, and certain types of touch.
What is the corticospinal tracts?
carry motor stimuli from the motor areas of the cerebral cortex.
What are the two divisions the PNS is grouped into?
Somatic sensory division, Visceral sensory division
What is the somatic sensory division?
Perceived stimuli that are brought to the cortex. Contains both special senses and general senses.
What is the visceral sensory division
stimuli from internal organs.
What information does the ascending pathways of POSTERIOR TRACT transmit?
TOUCH: vibration, fine touch, light touch, and propioception.
