FINAL EXAM!!!! Flashcards
What is tissue made up of?
Cells related in structure and function and The ECM
What are the functions of the ECM
- Provide tissue strength to resist stretching/ compressive forces
- Direct cells to proper poaitions within tissues
- Support proper function/ survival of cells
What are the two main components of the ECM
- Ground substances
- Protein Fibers
What are Ground Substances and what are the three components
Extracellular fluid made up of water, ions, and macromolecules.
Contains Glycosaminoglycans, Proteoglycans, and cell adhesion molecules
What are Protein Fibers and what are the three types?
Large polypeptides embedded within ground substances. Rope like structure that provide tensile strength.
Collagen fibers, Reticular fibers, elastin fibers
What do collagen fibers do?
Resist tension and pressure
What do elastin fibers do?
Allow stretch and elastic recoil
What do reticular fibers do?
Small collagen fibers that form a scaffold to structually support cells/ ground substance
What are the three ways cells can adjoin together?
Tight junctions, desmosomes, gap junctions?
What are epithelial tissue made up of?
mainly cells and little ECM.
How are cells linked together in epithelial tissue?
Desmosomes and tight junctions.
What are the roles of epithelial tissue in the body?
Protection, immune defense, secretion, transport, sensation
How is epithelial tissue classified
by number of cell layers and shape of the cells
What is one cell layer called and what is more than 1 cell layer called
simple= 1 cell layer
stratified= more than 1 cell layer
What are the three shapes of cells
Squamous- flattened
cuboidal- short
columnar-tall
