Q

What are Epiphyses (plura) ?

A

The sections found at both ends of long bone, it is cancellous (spongy).

  • articulate cartilage (epiphyses) is a layer of cartilage that cushions jolts and blows.

Q

What is an osteoblast cell ?

A

A bone forming cell found in all bone surfaces in process called osteogenesis/ ossification
It secrets organic component called collagen.

13
Q

What are osteocyte cells ?

A

They are differentiates mature non-dividing osteoblasts which sense what is happening in the bone. They are trapped in lacuna and mainly act as mechanoreceptors in mineral homeostasis.

Q

What are osteoclast cells ?

A

Giant cells which resorb bone through dissolving mineral and breaking down collagen. They are classed as the macrophages of the bone and develop form blood cells called monocytes and macrophages.

16
Q

What happens during bone formation ?

A

osteoblasts remove calcium from blood

17
Q

What happens during bone breakdown ?

A

osteoclasts release calcium into blood

18
Q

What affect does vitamin D have on blood calcium levels ?

A

Increases calcium absorption from the small intestine
Increases blood calcium levels

19
Q

What affect does calcitonin have on calcium levels in the blood ?

A

-Hormone produced in the thyroid gland
-Stimulates bone deposition by osteoblasts
-Inhibits osteoclast activity
-decreases blood calcium levels

20
Q

What affect does parathyroid hormone PTH have on calcium levels ?

A

-Primary regulator
-Stimulates osteoclasts to breakdown bone matrix
-Increases kidney absorption of calcium from urine
-Increases blood calcium levels
