The Integumentary System - The Skin (w10) Flashcards
What makes up the integumentary system ?
- skin
- glands
- hair
- nails
What are the 5 main function of the integumentary system ?
- protection (e.g. abrasion, uv light, water loss)
- sensation
- vitamin D production
- Temperature regulation
- Excretion
What is the function of the dermis in the skin?
Provides structural strength
What are the two layers of the dermis in the skin ?
- Papillary layer (the superficial layer)
- Reticular layer (the deep layer)
What makes up the connective tissue fibers on the skin ?
Collagen/ connective tissue
Fibroblast cells
What makes up the papillary layer of the dermis ?
- fine collagenous and elastic fibers
- blood vessels : supply epidermis which oxygen and nutrients
- Dermal papillae : increases the strength of the bond between the dermis and epidermis.
What properties do the collagen and elastic fibers provide the skin with ?
Strength and stretchability
What does the reticular layer consist of ?
- collagenous fibers and elastic fibers.
Is much denser
What does the dermis contain ?
- Hair follicles / associated muscles
- Sensory receptors
- Sweat and sebaceous glands
- Blood vessels
- Lymphatic vessels
All carry out key functions of skin
Compare incisions made across cleavage lines in comparison to incisions made parallel with cleavage lines …
Across cleavage lines = produce considerable scar tissue
Parallel to cleavage lines = produce less scar tissue
What happens during would healing ?
The fibroblasts proliferate
Where are cells in the epidermis generated ?
In the basal layer/ stratum basale
What are the 5 cell types found in the epidermis ?
- basal cells (precursor of keratinocytes)
- keratinocytes (contain keratin)
- melanocytes (skin pigment produces)
- Langerhans cells (immune cells)
- Merkel cell (sensory receptor cells)
What drugs ware best delivered through the skin ?
Lipid-soluble drugs as the diffuse through lipid layers
Cells of which layer undergo mitosis ?
Stratum basale
