The skeletal system - muscles Flashcards
What are the three different types of muscles?
Skeletal muscles
Cardiac muscles
Smooth muscles
What does the tissue of the skeletal muscle consist of?
Long cylindrical fibres with peripherally located nuclei.
These are voluntary
What does the tissue of the cardiac muscle consist of
Branched cylindrical fibres with centrally located nucleus.
Involuntary muscles, form wall of heart
Function is the contraction and relaxation of the heart.
What are smooth muscles composed of?
Spindle shaped fibres with centrally located nucleus.
They form blood vessels, airways and most pelvic and abdominal organs.
These muscles are involuntary
What are the 4 FEATURES of the muscle tissue (ECEE)
Excitability - the ability of the muscles to respond to stimuli.
Contractility - the ability of the muscles to contract forcefully after stimulation.
Extensibility - the ability of the muscles to stretch without being damaged.
Elasticity - the ability of the muscles to return to their normal size after contraction and relaxation.
What are the 4 FUNCTIONS of the muscle tissue
Producing all body movements
Stabilising the positions of the body, such as standing and sitting.
Storing and moving material in the body, such as blood in the heart.
Maintaining body temperature .
What two parts are the skeletal muscular system divided into.
Axial muscular system - Support the head and vertebral column and assist in respiration.
Appendicular muscular system - Supports and moves the shoulders and upper limbs, and the pelvic griddle and lower limbs.
What do skeletal muscles consist thousands of?
Long cells called muscle fibres.
These fibres are covered by connective tissues.
