The skeletal system - joints Flashcards
What are joints
Places of contact between a bone and another bone, cartilage or teeth.
Some joints have no movement and some are slightly moveable and some are very moveable.
What are the three different types of joints
Fibrous joints
Cartilaginous joints
Synovial joints
What are fibrous joints?
Bones bound closely by fibrous tissue.
Provide little or no movement.
What are the three types of fibrous tissues.
A Suture (Seam) is a joint with a thin layer of fibrous layer that binds skull bones.
A Syndesmosis (band), a fibrous joint that has a bigger space than the suture and is arranged in a sheet.
A Gomphosis (bolt) is a joint that consists of a peg and a socket such as the root of a tooth.
What are cartilaginous joints?
Have no synovial cavity, allowing slight or no movement.
Have two types
What are the two types of cartilaginous joints?
Synchondrosis, a joint which cartilage is the connective tissue.
Symphysis, a joint in with the connecting material is fibrocartilage such as is found in the pubic symphysis.
What are synovial joints
Have a synovial cavity between the articulating bones (bones of the joint) permitting the joint to move freely.
What do many synovial joints contain?
Ligaments
What are the two different types of ligaments found in synovial joints
Intra capsular
Extra capsular
What are the 6 different types of synovial joints?
Planar - intercarpal joints
Hinge - elbow joint
Pivot - head of radius and radial notch of ulna
Condyloid - wrist joint
Saddle - joint of the thumb
Ball and socket - hip joint
