The skeletal system Flashcards
Why are the 5 functions of bone?
Support/ structure Protection Movement/ leverage Storage Blood cell production
Ossification
Mineralization of hardening of the bone
Osteoblasts
Trap themselves in a lacunae and become a osteocyte
Osteocytes
Communicate with each other through canaliculi
Cancellous
Spongy inner layer of the bone. Reduce the weight
Compact
Heavy dense outer layer of all bones. Composed of Haversian canals
Volkmanns canals
Tiny channels in the bone matrix that vessels pass through. Keeping the bone alive
Nutrient foramen
Where large vessels enter the bone. Carry blood into and out of bone marrow
What are the 3 types of bone cells?
Osteoblasts
Osteocytes
Osteoclasts
Osteoclasts
Eat bone away when it’s not needed
Periosteum
Fibrous membrane that covers the outside of bone
Endosteum
Fibrous membrane that lines the hollow interior surface of bones
Diaphysis
The shaft of long bones
Epiphysis
The ends of long bones
Endochondral
Grows bone to replace cartilage
