The Skeletal System Flashcards
bone is made up of
bone or osseous tissue
cartilage
dense connective tissue
epithelium
adipose tissue
blood
nervous tissue
skeletal system performs six primary functions:
Support
Protection
Assistance in Movement
Mineral Homeostasis
Blood Cell Production
Triglyceride Storage
Osteoprogenitor
unspecialized stem cells.
They are the only bone cells to undergo cell division, with the resulting cells developing into osteoblasts
Osteoblasts
actual bone building cells.
They synthesize and secrete collagen fibers and other organic components needed to build the extracellular matrix of bone tissue
Osteocytes
mature bone cells and the main cells in bone tissue.
These cells maintain the bone’s daily metabolism and is in charge of the exchange of nutrients and waste materials being exchanged by blood.
Osteoclasts
huge cells derived from the fusion of as many as 50 monocytes (a type of white blood cell).
The job of the osteoclast is to release powerful lysosomal enzymes and acids that digest the protein and mineral components from the bone matrix.
This is part of the normal development, maintenance, and repair of bone, and also how the body extracts extra minerals when needed.
Compact bone tissue
also known as dense bone tissue,
contains few spaces and is the strongest type of bone
provides protection and support, and resists the strains produced by weight and movement
