The Simple Electric Motor Flashcards
Pg 171. Why does the spindle of wire rotate?
The coil is on a spindle therefore the forces act one up and one down = rotation
What is a split-ring commutator? Used for?
A cleaver way of swapping the contacts every half turn to keep the motor rotating in thee same direction
MUST LEARN THIS DEFINITION
How can the direction of the motor be reversed?
Swapping the polarity of the direct current (DC) supply
Swapping the magnetic poles
What speeds up the motor?
`1) More CURRENT
2) Stronger magnetic field
What are electric motors used for?
CD players, Food mixers, Printers, fan heaters, fans, drills, hair dryers, cement mixers etc.
How are electric motors used?
1) Link the coil to an axle and add whatever you want to the axle eg, a fan
