The Eye Flashcards
Describe the cornea
A transparent ‘window’ with a convex shape, and a high refractive index. Does the eye’s focusing. It is at the front of the eye.
Describe the Iris
The coloured part of the eye. Made up of muscles that control the size of the pupil. This controls the intensity of light entering the eye.
What is the pupil?
The hole in the middle of the Iris.
Describe the lens
The lens changes shape to focus light from objects at varying distances. It’s connected to the ciliary muscles by the suspensory ligaments and when the ciliary muscles contract, tension is released and the lens takes on a fat, more spherical shape. When they relax the suspensory ligaments pull the lens into a thinner, flatter shape.
Where are images formed in the eye?
Formed on the retina, which is covered in light-sensitive cells. These cells detect light and send signals to the brain to be interrupted.
Which parts of eye do you need to know?
Iris, Cornea, Pupil, Lens, Ciliary muscle, Suspensory ligaments, Retina
Is the image that forms on the film on a camera real or virtual?
Real
Describe a camera image
Real, Inverted and diminished
What is the eye equivalent to the film in a camera?
The retina
