the sea Flashcards
coastal process erosion 1.hydraulic action 2.Compressed air 3.Abraision 4.Attrition 5.solution
1.the force of waves removes removes rocks and sand from coastline 2.incoming waves compress air into joints and when the wave retreats the air expands and overtime this shatters the rock 3. pebbles are dashed along the coastline by waves which breaks off pieces of rock from the coast 4. pebbles and stones are worn down by rubbing against each other and are eventually turned into sand 5. seawater diddolves coastline
transportation longshore drift
when the waves come at the shore at an angle and the swash carry the sediments up shore while the backswash carries them back down the shore at a angle
features cliffs and waves - cut platforms
destructive waves erode the coast at a cliff and undermine it by eroding it forming a notch and overtime as the notch gets bigger the rocks above collapse
bays and headlands
they form in ares that have hard and soft rock facing the sea the soft rock quickly gets eroded this leaves a indent in the coast which is known as a bay the hard rock is left jutting out at the sea which is called a headlind
human interactions 1. groynes
groins are walls that are built to stop longshore drift to build a beach but than further up the coast isn’t getting that much sand
rock armour/borders
boulders are placed at the base of cliffs so waves can’t undermine cliffs because when a wave hits the boulders take all the force
sea wall
thy are built to protect coastal towns from the sea the walls are normally curved at the top forcing them to break back on top of the next incoming wave
gabion
are cages with big stones in them that are placed at the front of sand dunes to reduce the power of the waves
