45% mineral matter 25% air 25% water 4% humus 1% living organisms
how does soil form
soil forms by the parent rock breaking down over time into smaller fragments to form 45% of the soil and the overlying leaves and insects die and decompose to form humus and than over 300 years 1cm of soil forms
what is brown earth soil
its irelands most common soil, brown in colour, very fertile, and has a very high amounts of humus
what is podzol soil
just in A & B horizon is slightly acidic hardpan forms in it its infertile and is grey
what is leaching
the downward movement of nutrients or rain in soil by a excess amount of it
what is humus
a dark nutrient rich substance that is formed by decomposed organic matter e.g. dead bugs/plants
