Mass Movement Flashcards
What is a slow mass movement and explain what causes it
Soil creep: water gets stored in the soil and it will cause the landscape to slightly move down a hill every year (1cm) it also moves downward because that plant roots may have been removed so the soil particles arent bound together anymore so they are loose and slide
A fast mass movement
bog burst: it occurs when peat has become saturated with rainwater in upland areas where wet heavy peat can move more quickly downslope.
another fast mass movement
landslide: it occurs when a base of a slope is cut out to make room for a e.g. road and if the trees and roots have been removed from the hill it becomes unstable because there is no base to support it
a rapid mass movement
mudflow: a mudflow occurs when soil and rainwater mix to form mud which moves fast downhill. Mudflows can also occur when when snow and volcanic ash mix this is called ‘lahor’
