farming Flashcards
what are the 4 types of farming that I don’t know
- commercial: a company who grows/sells crops 2. subsistence: grow just enough for your family with a small surplus 3. intensive: intensively overworking the land by spreading fertiliser over stand not giving it time to recover 4. extensive farming: laving the land time to recover and not spreading fertilzer
factors that influence farming 1 the gradient
the gradient can affect the drainage of the land, what kind of machinery can be used and what of animals can be kept there
- the soil
- fertility: depends which kind of plants can grow there 2. drainage: well drained soils to prevent water logging which can harm crops and livestock 3. soil type: the soil type depends on what crops and animals can be raised there
climate
climate can influence the types of crops that can be grown and. for example irelands mild temperature and wet climate leads to a lot of grass that can be grown so its good for pastoral
rainfall
the amount of rain can cause watterlogging which can cause some crops to be unable to grow but irelands well drained soils prevent that
sunlight
some crops need lots of sunlight which ireland doesn’t get a lot of preventing us from growing certain crops
relief
the lowlands of ireland offer extensive areas of relatively flat land suitable for arable farming and mechanised agriculture
polders
low level land is selected for land reclamation and Han a dam is built than the water is pumped out using pipelines than most of the time crops are planted from the nutrient rich sea bed floor
