7 steps of the Scientific Method
~study theories ~avoid jumping to conclusions ~generate new ideas ~evaluate the evidence ~report findings
Why is psychology considered a science?
Because it is based of the scientific method. You research data to answer theories, make predictions and try to explain a phenomena.
What are the ethical considerations of psychological research?
The precautions taken to protect the well being of the participant eg confidentiality, debriefing, informed consent, right to withdrawl
What is the hypothesis?
Statement that predicts the outcome of an experiment
Independent variable?
What you are changing eg Tv shows
Dependent variable?
What you are measuring eg behaviour
Extraneous variable?
All other variables that need to remain constant eg food/ drink/ intake/ medication/ family history/ intelligence
Control group?
Group where iv is not changed
Experimental group?
Iv is changed
Random sampling?
Randomly selected may not include all groups
Stratfied sampling?
Organise into groups then select randomly (proportional)
Partcipant?
Person participating in a study
Sample?
Small number of individuals to represnt the population
Population?
People you are researching.
Qualitative data?
Refers to the description of the characteristics being studied
