There is a gas pipeline that stretched across the Kola Peninsula, and oil spills affect fishing and the construction of roads. Power lines may cut off access to reindeer calving grounds and sacred sites.

There has been a long standing dispute over the destruction of forests as they prevent reindeer from migrating between seasonal feeding grounds.

Around the Kola Peninsula, nuclear waste is being dumped with little concern for the surrounding environment or population and this is very close to where the Sami live.

Why has the tourism industry in Finland been criticised?

A

It has been criticised for turning Sami culture into a marketing tool by promoting opportunities to experience “authentic” Sami ceremonies and lifestyle. Some ceremonies don’t have any relevance to Sami culture. Replicas of jewellery and clothing sold by non-Sami people. To the Sami this is an insulting display of cultural exploitation.
