Managing Flooding In Bangladesh Flashcards
What does The Flood Action Plan do?
Helps to minimise the damage and maximise the benefits of flooding.
How long are the embankments going to be?
Plans for 8,000km of levees for the 16,000km of river.
Name three dates of major flooding in Bangladesh:
1987, 1988, 2007
Where are sluices and what do they do?
They are within embankments and they can be opened to reduce river flow and control damage of flooding.
Where are embankments positioned?
Set back from rivers.
Why are embankments set back from rivers?
To protect them from erosion (don’t have to keep maintaining them) and the distance between them and the river can be used for cereal production. It is cheaper in the long run.
Problem with flood action plan, increased time of flooding, elaborate:
Embankments prevent immediate backflip into river. This may create areas of stagnant water so there is increased chance of diseases such as cholera developing.
May cause wetlands to dry out leading to loss in biodiversity.
Problem with flood action plan, not enough sluices, elaborate:
If the levees collapse there will be extreme damage.
Problem with flood action plan, levees prevent backflow to river:
Create areas of stagnant water which increases the likelihood for diseases such as cholera.
Problem with flood action plan, elaborate on embankments may cause wetlands to dry out…
This will lead to a loss in biodiversity.
Problem with the flood action plan, elaborate on less flooding will reduce the number of fish…
Fish is a major source of protein for the people especially amongst the poor.
