What does ICZM stand for?
Integrates Coastal Zone Management
Define ‘The Coastal Area/zone’.
This included the shoreline, the built-up area that stretches inland and the shallow seas and marshes that border the land.
What does the ICZM do?
It is all about managing the whole of the coastal area and not just the narrow strip where the sea meets the land.
Aim of ICZM= to protect coastal areas from over-development and environmental damage.
When and who introduced the ICZM?
The ICZM was introduced by the European Union in 1996.
Name three ways the ICZM aims to protect coastal areas from over-development and environmental damage:
- Identifying the ways in which a coastal area is being put under pressure.
- Recommending what should be done to reduce pressure on the area.
- Putting in place the recommendations and checking that they are working.

1,000 ports and marinas and hundreds of industrial areas and power stations.
Where is the tourism often concentrated?
Tourism is often concentrated along the narrow strip of land along the shoreline.
