When was the Roman Republic established? Why was this bad?

A

Established after the failure of a Papal constitutional government… turmoil of revolution!

Pius fled Rome, Galetti formed a a revolutionary government and introduced tax reform, public works and the Constituente.

RR formed- unplanned with no clear leadership. Contained radical middle classes who didn’t understand the masses.

A

March 1849.
Bad as decisions reactive not proactive: removes church education control and land, and promises a constitution etc.
Liberal!

Lost support when forced to make compromises: moderate social reform was needed to maintain control.

Garibaldi left with 400 followers to San Marino to carry on fighting.

Mazzini was exiled to London on the 5th July 1849.

Disorganised and uncoordinated but no sufficient time to prove their worth.
