The Roles of The Blood Flashcards
What is the mass transport system called in mammals
Cardiovasuclar system
What is the role of ‘circulation’ in the body
Carrying hormones from one part of the body to another
Forming part of the defence system of the body
Distributing heat
What is the role of plasma in the body
Digested food products from the small intestine to all the parts of the body where they are needed for immediate use or storage
Nutrient molecules from storage areas to the cells that need them
waste products from cells to the organs such as the lungs or kidneys that excrete them from the body
How does the plasma maintain a body temperature
This achieved by transferring heat around the system from deep-seated organs or very active tissues
What does the plasma also acts as
It acts as a buffer to pH changes
What is the role of haemoglobin in red blood cells
Red pigment that carries oxygen and gives them their colour
Where is haemoglobin formed
Bone marrow
Do red blood cells contain a nucleus?
No
What do red blood cells do
Transport oxygen from the lungs to all the cells
How does the bioconcave shape help the red blood cell
they have a large surface to volume ratio so oxygen can diffuse into and our of them rapidly
What is the benfit of red blood cells have no nucleus
Having no nucleus leaves much more space inside the cells fro the haemoglobin molecules that carry the oxygen
Where are white blood cells (leucocytes) formed
Bone marrow and although some mature in the thymus gland
What is the main function of white blood cells
defend the body against infection
What is the structure of white blood cells
Contain nucleus and have a colourless cytoplasm
What are neutrophils
They engulf and digest pathogens by phagocytosis they are multi lobed nuclei
(part of the non-specfic immune system)
Draw them
What are Eosinophils
(non specific immune response)
Protects body against parasites in allergic reaction and inflammation and in developing immunity to disease `
What are monocytes
They can move out of the blood and into the tissues to from macrophages
What are lymphocytes
small leucocytes with very large nuclei that are vitally important in the specific immune response of the body
What is the role of platelets in the blood
involved in the clotting mechanism of the blood
Where are platlets found
bone marrow
How do substances move out of the plasma or red blood cells and the body cells
Diffusion or active transport
What are granulocytes:
granules in the cytoplasm of cell that take up stain
What are agrauloctyes
lecucytes tha do not contain granules ti take up stain in their cytoplasm
unLobed nuclei
Examples of agranulocytes
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Examples of granulocytes
Basophils
Neutrophils
Eosinphils
What are basophills
part of the non specfic immune system
2 lobed nuclei
produce histamines involved in inflamantion and alergic reaction
DRAW THEM
