Osmosis- A special case of diffusion Flashcards
The definition of osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water from an area of higher water potential to an area of low water potential across a partially permeable membrane
How do water molecules enter the cell
solution outside the cell has a lower concentration of dissolved substances than the solution inside the cell, there will be a concentration gradient that encourages water molecules to move into the cell
What do we mean by osmotic concentration
measure of the concentration of the solutes in a solution that have an osmotic effect
What do we mean by isotonic solution
the osmotic concentration of the solutes in the solution is the same as that in the cells
What do we mean by hypotonic solution
the osmotic concentration of solutes in the solution is lower than that in the cytoplasm of the cells
What do we mean by hypertonic solution
the osmotic concentration of solutes in the solution is higher than that in the cytoplasm
Why does osmosis need to be controlled
too much water into the cell may cause the cell to burst
too little water into the cell may cause the cell to shrink
What happens when osmosis gets out of control
the cytoplasm loses its internal structure and the chemical reaction that normally take place stop working
In plant cell what stops the cell from bursting
cellouse cell wall
What is pressure potential (inward pressure)
Pressure potential is the hydrostatic pressure exerted on water in a cell.
What do we mean by turgor in a plant cell
Pressure exerted by fluid in a cell that presses the cell membrane against the cell wall.
What is the effect of the rigid structure of cells in plant cells
it supports the stems and leaves of plant
What is incipient plasmolysis
so much water has moved out of the cell by osmosis that the tugor us lost and the cell membrane begins to pull away from the cell as the protoplasm shrinks
What is plasmolysis
Plasmolysis is the process in which cells lose water by to osmosis in a hypertonic solution and the cell walls are destroyed
What do we mean by water potential
measure of potential for water to move out of a solution by osmosis
