The respiratory system Flashcards
Why is oxygen needed?
to get energy from food
What happens to the air when we breath through our nose?
its filtered, warmed, and moistened
What is the larynx? and where is it located?
the voice box and located at the bottom of the pharynx
What is in the larynx?
the vocal cords
Where is the trachea located?
at the bottom of the larynx
What prevents food from entering the trachea?
the epiglottis
What do bronchi do?
they carry air to each lung
What does the trachea divide into?
Bronchial tubes, (bronchi)
The bronchi divide in to smaller branches that contain what?
alveoli
What are capillaries?
tiny blood vessels
Where does gas exchange occur?
in the alveoli
What’s a diaphragm?
a muscle found under the rib cage
When you inhale what happens to the diaphragm?
it contracts/flattens
When you exhale what happens to the diaphragm?
it relaxes / goes up
The respiratory consists of what 6 things?
1- nose 2- pharynx 3- larynx 4- trachea 5- bronchial tubes 6-lungs
What is muscular contraction?
breathing
When you inhale what happens to the ribs?
the muscles between the ribs pull the ribs upwards and outwards
What’s the most common disease?
A regular cold.
What’s a thick mucous when it comes to diseases in the respiratory system?
Phlegm
What’s asthma?
partial blocking of the bronchial tubes
What’s bronchitis?
inflammation in the bronchial tubes.
What are nasal cavities?
two chambers located in the nose
The trachea contains what type of glands?
Mucous glands.
What’s diffusion?
when particles go from a high concentration to a low concentration.
Where are the alveoli located?
in the lungs
What is venous blood?
blood that is filled with CO2
What is arterial blood?
blood that is filled with O2.
The point of respiration is to get what?
Energy
Name 2 types of fluids.
1-gases
2-liquids
What’s a compressible fluid?
It’s a gas that can be compressed because of the large spaces between the particles.
Why wouldn’t you be able to compress a fluid?
Because the spaces between the particles are very small
When gasses are compressed what changes?
the volume
