The blood Flashcards
How big are sickle cells?
1/2 the size of regular cells.
Comparing to a regular cell, do sickle cells hold more oxygen?
No they do not.
What produces antibodies?
Lymphocytes.
Where are antibodies produced?
White blood cells.
What is hemoglobin?
It is a protein that contains iron.
Where are the hemoglobin?
In the red blood cells.
What is anemia?
It’s when the blood cannot carry enough oxygen.
What is leukemia?
It’s cancer in the bone marrow.
What does the lymphatic system do?
It returns tissue fluid to the blood.
What are pathogens?
A foreign substance.
What makes red blood cells become brighter?
Oxygen.
Is there a nucleus in red blood cells?
No. That’s why its thinner towards the middle.
Do white blood cells have a nucleus?
Yes.
What is lymph?
It’s the outside of the blood cell.
What does hemoglobin carry?
This is what carries the oxygen and carbon dioxide.
What is phagocytosis? And where does it happen?
It’s what surrounds and digests the enemies and in the white blood cell.
Phagocytosis makes weapons which are called what?
Antibodies.
What do antibodies do?
They fit right onto the antigens.
What are antigens?
They are the protein on the surface of the pathogen.
What does lymph do?
It carries WBC to the infections.
Would someone with an infection have more white blood cells or less? Why?
More because more need to be produced to be able to battle the infection.
What will happen if the same germ enters your body?
Lymphocytes will recognize how to make certain antibodies to fight off the antigens.
Disclaimer.
There are specific antibodies for specific antigens.
What is the reason why we cannot donate blood to anyone?
Because some antigens/proteins can be considered foreign.
What do vaccines do?
They protect you from diseases and boost your immune system.
What do vaccines contain, (most of the time)?
A disease germ that has been weakened or that has died.
Why are there disease germs in vaccines?
So that your body makes antibodies to fight off this kind of germ.
Blood transfusions: Blood is ____ ____ to separate components of the blood.
spun down.
What are lymphocytes?
They’re in the white blood cells and they make antibodies.
