The Respiratory System 🫁 Flashcards
1
Q
What is Inspiration? (role of the diaphragm)
A
Contracts and flattens
Ribs up and out
Chest cavity expands
2
Q
What is Expiration? (role of the diaphragm)
A
relaxes
Ribs down and in
Diaphragm back to dome shape
3
Q
Process of inspiration
A
- The diaphragm contracts and flattens increasing the size of the chest cavity
- Pressure inside the lungs decreases and air enters the body through the nose and mouth
- Air goes down the trachea
- Trachea splits into 2 bronchi (one to each lung)
- Bronchi split into smaller bronchioles
- Bronchioles have small air sacs at the end called alveoli
- Diffusion takes place at the alveoli
- Diaphragm relaxes back into a dome shape
- Pressure inside the lungs increases and air is forced out of the nose and mouth
4
Q
What is tidal volume?
A
This is the amount you breathe in and out in one normal breath.
5
Q
What is vital capacity?
A
This is the maximum volume of air you can breathe out after breathing in as much as you can. (peak flow)
6
Q
Where does gaseous exchange take place?
A
Alveoli
7
Q
What are alveoli and what do they do?
A
The alveoli are tiny air sacks inside the lungs.
When you breathe in, they fill with air.
