The Cardiovascular System 🫀 Flashcards
Functions of the Cardiovascular System
Transport of oxygen
Transport of carbon dioxide
Transport of nutrients
Regulating body temperature
Clotting of blood
What do arteries do?
Arteries transport the oxygenated blood away from the left side of the heart. Arteries carry blood under a high pressure.
What do veins do?
Veins transport blood from all over the body back to the heart and lungs for re-oxygenation. Veins carry blood under a low pressure.
What do veins have that arteries and capillaries don’t?
Valves that prevent backflow of blood
What do capillaries do?
Capillaries are small blood vessels that carries blood to and from the body’s cells.
What happens in Vasodilation?
Radius of thevessel increases, increasingblood flow
What happens in vasoconstriction?
Radius of the vessel decreases, decreasing blood flow.
What do red blood cells do?
Red blood cells carry oxygenfrom the lungs to the muscles and removes CO2 from muscles tolungs
What do white blood cells do?
White blood cells defend against disease. Vital to health. Prevent infection after injury
