The Muscular System 💪 Flashcards
What do tendons do?
They connect muscles to bones
What do ligaments do?
They are tough, elastic fibres that link bones to bones.
What does cartilage do?
It prevents the end of the bones from rubbing together at joints.
What are the two main types of contraction?
Isotonic and Isometric
What happens in isotonic contraction?
The muscle moves under pressure. It shortens and lengthens.
What happens in isometric contraction?
The muscle is contracted but the length stays the same.
Voluntary muscle?
mostly found in the skeletal system and is moved consciously.
Involuntary muscle?
Found in blood vessels and digestive system. Moved unconsciously. Constantly working and controlled by the nervous system.
Cardiac muscle?
Only found in the heart and works unconsciously. Pumps blood around the body.
Agonist muscle action?
Muscle contracts and shortens
Antagonist muscle action?
Muscle relaxes and lengthens
Slow twitch muscle fibres? (Marathon)
Needed in long distance endurance activities. Contract very slow. High resistance to fatigue. Red in color.
Fast twitch type IIA muscle fibres? (400m)
Contract fast. Medium resistance to fatigue. Pink in color
Fast twitch type IIX muscle fibres? (100m)
Contract very fast. Low resistance to fatigue. White in color
