what is the pleural membrane?
an outer membrane layer around each lung
what are goblet cells?
cells which line the trachea and produce mucus
what is the structure of the trachea?
supported by C-shaped rings of cartilage and lined with ciliated epethelial cells to prevent infection
what is the structure of bronchioles?
no cartilage, muscles which contract and control air movement
what is the structure of alveoli?
wall of flattened epethelial cells surrounded by collagen, elastic tissue and a large capillary network
what is the pleural cavity?
the space between the double layer pleural membrane, filled with pleural fluid which lubricates the lungs
which muscles control flow of air in and out of the lungs?
intercostal muscles (interior and exterior) and the diaphragm
what is pulmonary ventilation rate?
total volume of air moved in the lungs per minute, tidal volume x ventilation rate
what are endothelial cells?
epithelial cells which line the lumen of the circulatory system
what is lung sufactant?
a mixture which maintains the structure of alveoli by decreasing surface tension at the air-liquid interferance
