The reproductive process Chapter 7 Flashcards
For study for the mid term exam
What are the traits of sexual reproduction
Sex
Meiosis
Fertilization
Gonads
Gametes
Zygotes
What are the traits of asexual reproduction
Mitosis
How is Bisexual reproduction defined
two genetically distinct parents
or
Diocecious = sexes are separate
How are hermaphrodites defined
Hermaphrodite individuals display one sex/ both sexes
What are the three types of hermaphroditic sexes defined
Monoecious- individual are both sex
Spatially - organs located at different locations
Sequentially - change sex overtime
What are eggs and how are they defined by their chromosome count
Ovas, haploid or n
How are sperm defined by their chromosome count
haploid or n
What are the 5 types of asexual types of reproduction
Budding
Gemmulation
Fragmentation
Meiotic Parthenogenesis
Ameiotic parthenogenesis
What is budding
Little clones forming on the surface
EX: hydras
What is Gemmulation
Potential babies forming in nodes in the body, to survive tough conditions
EX: freshwater sponges
What is fragmentation
Cutting an organism and both pieces can form again
What is Meiotic parthenogenesis
Moms DNA but is not an exact clone of mom
EX: Some lizards
What is Ameiotic parthenogenesis
Clone of mom
What is Gametogenesis
Formation/ maturation of gametes
What is Spermato genesis
Maturation of sperm cell
Occurs in the seminferous tubules of testis
What are the spermtozoa
The cells with the head of a haploid and a flagella
What is Oogenesis
Maturation of oova cells (eggs)
occurs in ovarian follicles
What are the polar bodies of oogenesis
The smaller useless cells produced in the first and second round of meiosis during the maturation of oova cells.
This happens because the one oova cell needs all of the cell mass because the sperm cell only carries genetic information.
What is gondal sex
It is sex that is determined by chromosomes
EX: XX or XY
What is pheotypic and behavioral sex
Sex that is dependent on hormones, can be affected by temperature (reptiles) and social behavior (clown fish)
What are Oviparous animals
They are animals that lay eggs
What are Viviparous animals
They are animals that produce fully formed offspring from the body
What Ovoviviparous animals
Animals which get their nourishment from the yolk but still remain in the mother until birth
EX: sharks
What are the primary organs called in reproductive systems
Gonads
What are the organs that are not the primary organs in the reproductive systems
accessory organs
