What are cardinals?
Cardinals are the Pope’s advisors. They also elect the Pope.
Who was the Pope?
The ruler of the Catholic Church. He lived in Rome and was elected by cardinals.
What is a diocess?
A country was divided into parts called a diocess. It was ruled by a bishop. Each diocess was divided in to parishes.
What is a priest?
A priest is a holy man. One or a few priests can be in charge of a parish. They hold masses to teach people about God.
Where did monks live?
Monks lived in a monastery.
Where did nuns live?
Nuns lived in a convent.
What did Friars do?
Friars helped all kinds of people.

What language was a mass supposed to be given in?
Latin, although many priests couldn’t speak it and did mass in their everyday language.
What kind of families were most bishops from?
Wealthy, noble families.

Something you could buy that would allegedly get you into Heaven.
Why did people often die from their sicknesses?
Doctors didn’t know much about medicine and could not do anything for very sick people.

Someone who disagrees with the Church’s religious teachings.

The act of banishing a member of a church from the communion believers and the privileges of the church. Cutting a person off from religious society.
